Southern Tennis Hall of Fame Inductees 1981 - 1985

Wade Herren, Alabama, 1985

Wade L. Herren, Alabama, 1985

  • Was born on June 7, 1927, in Birmingham, Ala.
  • Attended Tulane University and Birmingham-Southern University on tennis scholarships.
  • Won over 200 tennis titles, including an SEC Championship in 1948 while at Tulane and four national championships.
  • Founded Highland Racket Club and contracted to build tennis courts all over the South.
  • Inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.
  • Inducted into the USTA Alabama (Tennis Association) Hall of Fame.
  • Inducted into the Birmingham-Southern HOF for his achievements and influence in the sport of tennis.
  • Served as resident of the USTA Alabama President.
  • Wade passed away on Dec. 7, 2016.

  • Attended Georgia Tech on football scholarship but left to play tennis in South Carolina.
  • Won four South Carolina State intercollegiate tennis titles at Presbyterian College.
  • Ranked number 16 in the United States and quarterfinalist at Wimbledon in 1956.
  • Won the North Carolina Open Singles Championships seven times between 1958-67.
  • Head Tennis Coach at the University of North Carolina from 1980-93.
  • Led his UNC team to ACC Championships in 1990 and 1992.
  • Member of seven Halls of Fames.

  • Seven Davis Cup teams.
  • Seven 45 and over national championships.
  • 14 years in the United States top ten.
  • Six Florida state championships.
  • Three World Senior ITF Singles Championships.
  • Wimbledon Doubles Championship in 1957 with Budge Patty.
  • Member of nine Halls of Fames. The Mulloy Cup, for players 80 years of age and over, is named in his honor.

Alex Guerry, Tennessee Texas, 1984

  • Recommended two new USTA junior age divisions for boys and girls (the 12s and 14s.)
  • Responsible for reorganizing the USTA senior tennis competition (35s-85s.)
  • Chattanooga Tennis Singles Champion ten times and Senior Doubles 20 times.
  • Won the National Father-Son Doubles Championships in 1966 and 1971.
  • Valedictorian of Baylor School and University of the South. Four time recipient of the Jo Conn Guild Medal for highest academic average.
  • Served in WWII as Army Air Force pilot from 1941-1945, rising to rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
  • President and chairman of the board of directors of Chattem Drug and Chemical Company until his death in 1990.

  • Winner William P. Jacobs Award.
  • Member Southern Tennis, National Collegiate, and Alabama Sport Hall of Fames.
  • President of the Southern Lawn Tennis Association in 1949.
  • Founder of the prestigious Blue Gray National Collegiate Tennis Classic.
