STF Scholarship Application form
The Southern Tennis Foundation’s Major Gifts Committee has established 13 college scholarships in the years 2020 through 2022. The STF awards 10 scholarships of $1,000 to qualified and selected incoming freshmen. If they continue to qualify, the scholarship continues for four years.
Scholarship Information
The STF’s Scholarship Committee selects 10 exceptional graduating high school seniors to receive the scholarships and academic excellence awards.
The scholarship is $1,000, which is renewable for the next three years if the student maintains a 3.0 or better GPA, remains a full-time student and does not otherwise receive a full college or tennis scholarship.
Minimum Criteria for Selection
- Current member of the USTA
- Current resident of a Southern state with residence in a Southern state for a minimum one school year
- Annual Household income is $100K or less with no children in college
- Annual Household income is $120K or less with 1 or more children in college
- Active tennis player who has:
o Been ranked in the top 500 in USTA Southern in past two years
o Played on a high school team for two years, or
o Played in a Junior Team Tennis, NJTL team or program for two years
Additional Criteria Used by the Scholarship Committee:
- Financial need
- Grade point average
- Extracurricular activities
- Tennis participation
- Essay/letter of recommendation
The application requires a high school transcript, a short essay, support letter and financial information. Students must complete all sections of the application and upload all requested supplemental information to be considered.
Recipients are expected to engage in publicity about their scholarship; the role of tennis and education in their lives; and submit a photo and/or video.
Applications are now closed. Applications are accepted in the spring, usually during February through or April of each year. Check this website for next year’s applications.

Ten Scholarships Awarded in 2022
Southern Tennis Foundation (STF) , the charitable arm of USTA Southern, awarded ten (10) $1,000 scholarships for incoming college freshmen in 2022. For our page listing the 2022 recipients, click here.
In 2022, the STF established scholarships for International Tennis Hall of Fame inductee Althea Gibson and the following Southern Tennis Hall of Fame inductees: Nehemiah Atkinson, Jeff Gray and J. Randolph Gregson. Other scholarships announced in 2022 were for coaches Donnie Ellis & Keith Swindoll, honoring Alabama tennis professionals and Jim Warren.
In 2021, the STF announced the David R. Mauritson Memorial Scholarship, Paul Scarpa Scholarships. In 2020, the Dennis & Pat Van der Meer Higher Education Scholarships and the JL Stacks Memorial Scholarships were established. In 2019 the Mildred F. Southern Academic Excellence Awards were established for two of the foundation’s annual college scholarships.

The foundation has awarded scholarships since 2016, but, for the first time in 2021, all STF scholarships are supported by endowments.
